Estrella Falls – My Journey To The Southern Side of Palawan Island, Philippines

A visit to Palawan Island in the Philippines is a dream come true for a Filipino like me who is aching to live up to the challenge not to become a stranger in one’s home land. Hence, while I was on board the Cebu to Puerto Princesa flight of Cebu Pacific Air, I kept on jotting down on my notes on what possible destinations can I visit for my 4-day, 3-night trip inclusive of air travel and 1-day business meeting in the island.

It is customary on my part to take a picture at the point of my entry in a place like this . . .

A 5-minute ride in finely-paved thoroughfares made green by tall and robust trees on each side brought me to Rizal Avenue where a popular backpackers hostel is located . . .

It was only upon checking-in at the hotel that I learned that I was booked for a 1-day tour to selected Palawan attractions the following day yet. Since it was still 1:00 PM in my watch, I felt that spending the rest of the day sleeping in my room while in the island so popular both in the local and international tourism arena would be one of the biggest time squandering act that I would ever commit.

Hence, I squeezed information from the front desk teller on what possible attraction not included in the next day tour itinerary that I can visit in just a half-day. Honda Bay is the best possible option according to the lady staff. However, when I flagged down a tricycle bound to the port for boats leading to Honda Bay, the kind driver told me that my travel there would be just a waste of time and money as I could no longer catch up the last trip for the Honda Bay tour. Candidly, the information I got had sent extreme weakness down my spine as I sit on the chair in frustration.

Fortunately, a male hotel staff arrived and, sensing my extraordinary want for a sightseeing trip at that very moment, he told me that I still have the chance to visit a worthy attraction in Palawan if only I have the guts and resources to do it. Such words were enough to spring myself up from the seat as I was told that Estrella Falls is the best possible option but I have to take a fast-moving motorcycle as it is located more than 80 kilometers from the city proper. Without batting an eyelash, I agreed on the XLR Honda motorcycle plus driver hire though it was a bit pricey.

To be gutsy is indeed a requirement for such a trip as we traveled at an average speed of 50 kph, thanks for the extremely nice pavement constructed by the Hanjin Group spanning 69 kilometers south of Puerto Princesa to the town of Aborlan. Though the road from Aborlan was not that good, but we managed to drive our way until we stopped at this junction in Barangay Malatgao in the town of Narra exactly 83.5 kilometers and 2.0 hours travel away from Puerto Princesa City . . .

Estrella Falls – Final Thought

The waters cascading from Victoria Peak that had been split into two upon reaching a rock resembling a human face right at the base of the plunge pool makes Estrella Falls so unique among the waterfalls that I have had visited in the Philippines. The waters flowing into 3 sets of natural pools of varying depths, with the first suitable for professional swimmers, the second fit for non-swimmer adults and the third ideal for children, makes the spot a perfect venue for family gatherings. Most importantly, the exceptionally clean and refreshingly cool waters, which gives credence to its championship award in the search for the cleanest and greenest inland bodies of water in the Philippines, qualifies Estrella Falls as a must visit for waterfalls and nature lovers like you.

Pagsanjan Falls – My Beautiful Waterfalls Sight Seeing Trip In Laguna, Luzon Island, Philippines

Pagsanjan Falls – A Preface

Pagsanjan Falls, together with Puerto Princesa Underground River and other sight seeing spots, is among the top five natural attractions that this island vacations buff had been dreaming to visit. Considered as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Philippines whose image is among the prominently displayed waterfalls pictures in private homes and public buildings in the country, it is actually located in the town of Cavinti, Laguna though its entry point is within the jurisdiction of the municipality of Pagsanjan particularly in the village of Pinagsanjan which serves as junction area of Balanac and Bumbungan Rivers.

Pagsanjan Falls – My Dream Travel To Nature Destination

Scenes from my elementary school days kept flashing back on my mind. With a stomach filled with either sweet potato or cassava with a little or no viand at all and, after bidding good by to my dear mother, I would run through more than a hundred concrete steps towards the school situated in the hill top overlooking the town center and hurriedly enter my school. Among the reasons that I never lost enthusiasm in going to school was because of the eagerness to gaze at the beautiful pictures of Philippine natural attractions, among them the Pagsanjan Falls, prominently displayed by my teacher in the front wall of our class room that really captured my imagination and made me inspired to pursue my studies being the only means I saw that I can escape from the bondage of poverty and visit my dream natural attractions some day.

More than two decades had passed since my college graduation and here I am, fulfilling my dream of visiting my top destinations, this time to Pagsanjan Falls. . .

When our vehicle was traversing the national highway from Calamba City to the capital city of Sta. Cruz in Laguna, I could not help but sympathize with the bitter feelings harbored by the Philippine national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal against the abusive Spanish Guardia Civil who forced her beloved mother to walk her way from their home in Calamba passing through the 45-kilometer road en route to the jail situated in Sta. Cruz.

A few minutes more of travel and my eyes was glued on this sight. . .

The Puerta Real (Town Gate) erected by the Pagsanjenos on the miracle site where the luminous apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe holding aloft a shining sword had stopped the bandits led by a certain Tankad who came to loot and plunder the town on December 8, 1877.

Unaware of the consequences, our vehicle followed on a motorcycle riding man who introduced to us as an experienced tour guide and who brought us here . . .

The Pagsanjan Falls Information Chart displayed on the table of the Landing Area

The information chart clearly stipulated that the standard round trip rate for the Pagsanjan Falls boat ride was only PhP 1,000.00 but the man sitting on the table charged us PhP 1,350.00 each. Being a person who prefer to be overcharged than to haggle, I left the responsibility to negotiate to my sister-in-law Ate Lourcy but her haggling expertise was no match to the adamance of the person manning the landing area. As we were running out of time, we agreed to pay provided we have to be issued the corresponding official receipt in excess of the standard rate which we understood to be covered by cash tickets. Nevertheless, no receipt was issued as agreed, hence, we hurried to the stairs down the river bank as the boat assigned to us had already docked.

Despite the feeling of resentment, not with the money but for the duping experience involved, but we still managed to smile while we were on board the non-motorized boat . . .

Our fate were then put on the hands of the experienced boat men who expertly piloted our boat as we shoot the foaming rapids . . .

The thrill did not only end with shooting the rapids but with the gazing of the grand canyons on both sides of the stream as well. As I focused my camera directly over our head, this sight hovering us had really amazed me much . . .

Upward we went further passing through the hard-to-maneuver parts of the stream passing in the process four more minor waterfalls until we reached our final destination. . .

As we docked at the banca garage, the sound of the thundering waterfalls made me jump from the boat as I carefully slogged over the pathway leading to the Pagsanjan Falls and this sight excited me most . . .

We were then prodded by the raft men cum life guards to try the thrill of getting nearer to Pagsanjan Falls and enter the Devil’s Cave at the edge of the plunge pool but I preferred to stay put to film Zenith in her exciting bamboo raft trip . . .

The return trip downstream took us 45 minutes to maneuver in contrast to our 1 hour, more or less, upstream travel to Pagsanjan Falls.

Pagsanjan Falls – Final Insights

Shooting the rapids, gazing through the grand canyons and savoring the mighty waterfalls in action was one of the most fulfilling moments of my life which I recommend you to also experience. Nevertheless, I urge you to be vigilant along the way and not allow yourselves to be duped. If you intend to visit the place, you better consult the comprehensive blog post of Tutubi about the tourist spot. Be that as it may, being a waterfalls fanatic, my visit to Pagsanjan Falls was not only a dream come true but a trip to heaven here on earth.

Travel To Nature – TheTinago Falls in Mindanao Island, Philippines

Travel To Nature – An Introduction

A travel to nature, as a variation of my island vacations and island getaways escapades, was on top of my agenda when I was in Cagayan de Oro City en route for a summer family vacation in a mountain view nature park and other sightseeing tourist attractions frequented by creationists in Cebu Island, Philippines. Hence, with our youngest kid in tow, I and my wife chose Iligan City as our jump-off point to Cebu City so we can have a side visit at the famous Timoga Springs as well as the Tinago Falls.

Travel To Nature – My Tinago Falls Escapade

We arrived at Iligan City at 9:00 in the morning and was told by a staff of the Cebu Ferries that the vessel would depart for Cebu at 4:00 pm. Hence, I and my wife had a quick huddle on where to go. Initially, we decided to have a quick swim at the Timoga Springs in Barangay Buru-on. Nevertheless, after peeping on the gates of the resort, the sight of huge crowd of summer revellers had changed our mind and made us decide to go straight to Tinago Falls. I was told by a passenger motorcycle (habal-habal) driver that Tinago falls is accessible thru both ends via Iligan City and Linamon, Lanao del Norte but he informed me that the latter is the easier route. Then, after buying food for the 4 of us including the driver in one of the chicken barbecue stalls on the roadside opposite Timoga Springs, we headed for our travel to nature straight to the town of Linamon. Upon reaching the town proper, the habal-habal slowed down as we approached a street corner on the left side of the national highway with a signage  THIS WAY TO TINAGO FALLS, which we followed through towards a gravelled road heading uphill until we reached this place . . .

Travel To Nature

The winding concrete stairway down a ravine . . .

I was about to confront the driver on what he meant by easy route but preferred to just keep on slogging deeper onto the stairway taking care not to miss holding on to the concrete handrails. Then, I  heard a gentle roaring sound coming from the foot of the ravine which stimulated my senses to go down further. The roaring had intensified and became more  and more thundering as my excitement kept soaring high until I spotted this scenery…

Travel To Nature

The azure plunge pool of the Tinago Falls as viewed a few steps farther . . .

After slogging a total of  437 steps downward, I was really mesmerized with the sight of the waterfalls with water spreading horizontally as it descends while remaining in contact with the bedrock unfurling before my eyes. . .

My travel to nature would not be complete without taking a close-up photograph of the mighty  5-drop  Tinago waterfalls from both jurisdictions . . .

To satisfy my passion of taking pictures of nature, I aimed my camera lens at this lovely mini-waterfall . . .

Had it not been for a very tight schedule, we could have engaged into a languorous swim at the cool and azure waters of the Tinago Falls plunge pool. In fact,  my youngest kid Edrian could not stop his tears as he was prodding me to allow him to have a quick dip. . .

As we were really short of time, I decided to take a souvenir shoot of my wife with the Tinago Falls . . .

We ended our travel to nature with a strenuous 437 step climb upstairs and only realized how useful this view deck-looking structures were. . .

Travel To Nature – Final Thoughts

I really harbor a deep affection with waterfalls. The thundering sound produced by the impact of the cascading waters dropping into the ravine is really sweet to my ears. The awe-inspiring feeling brought about by the  view on the cascading waters rapidly dropping over a steep region is second to none. The mists that smack on my face really produces an exhilarating sensation deep inside me which is beyond compare. No wonder, I consider my travel to nature at Tinago Falls as a trip to heaven here on earth.

Seaside Waterfall – A Visit To Magkahuyog Falls in Bucas Grande Island, Philippines

Seaside Waterfall – An Introduction

A seaside waterfall, aptly named Magkahuyog Falls, which is a favorite island vacations, island getaways and family beach vacations destinations, has unique and stunning features compared to other ponds and waterfalls prominently featured in popular waterfalls pictures of biggest waterfalls in the world as it cascades directly into a seaside beach towards the crystal clear water of the sea. It is located in the western part of Bucas Grande Island, Socorro, Surigao del Norte, Philippines.

Seaside Waterfall – Why Visit The Place

The name Magkahuyog is derived from the Surigaonon term HUYOG, which means FALL DOWN. The seaside waterfall is the favorite picnic area among the residents of the communities in the western part of Bucas Grande Island, notably, Barangays Pamosaingan, Nueva Estrella and Honrado. Being a resident of the Socorro town center on the eastern side of the island, I seldom managed to visit the place. It was only during the time that we had a seminar at Barangay Pamosaingan with guests coming from the Caraga Regional Office in Butuan City that I decided to treat them to a sightseeing trip to the area.

On board a motorized banca, we traveled for 15 minutes from the Pamosaingan wharf amidst the calm and placid waters. As we approached the seaside waterfall, my eyes was greeted with this stunning view of  the water that flows down at a low angle of descent in small steps or stages over rocks . . .

Seaside Waterfall – Final Thoughts

Generally speaking, a waterfall is closely associated with dense rain forests deeply buried inland. Most often than not, you can reach a waterfall by slogging your way into rugged terrains as seldom you can find one which is accessible by any form of transportation. Nevertheless, in Bucas Grande Island, right on the comfort of a banca, you can savor the spectacle of a flowing water rapidly dropping in elevation as it flows over a steep rocky region into the sea. The size and height of Magkahuyog Falls is not that spectacular compared to the other famous waterfalls that I had visited. But, tourists kept coming to the island to feel for themselves the thrill of seeing an amazing seaside waterfall in action.

Kawasan Falls – My Visit To The Famous Waterfalls In Cebu Island, Philippines

Kawasan Falls – An Introduction

Kawasan Falls is considered as the most famous waterfalls in Cebu Island with images prominently displayed among the best waterfalls pictures of the Philippines and frequently visited by island vacations enthusiasts, creationists and other tourists wanting to visit natural attractions and tourist spots for the purpose of sightseeing and taking pictures of nature. It is situated in Barangay Matutinao in the town of Badian, 105 kilometers away from Cebu City.

Kawasan Falls – Why I went There?

Upon invitation of my good friend Reynero “Tata” Escultor, Vice-Chairman of Kawasan Nature Park Multi-Purpose Cooperative (KNPMPC), I decided to include Kawasan Falls in the itinerary of the study tour of the staff of the Socorro Empowered Peoples Cooperative (SOEMCO) based in Bucas Grande Island, Socorro, Surigao del Norte, Philippines.  On board 4 hired vans, we left  the Hidden Valley Resort in Lamac, Pinamungajan, Cebu at exactly 7:00 o’clock in the morning of April 22, 2011. We passed by the towns of Pinamungajan, Aloguinsan, Barili, Dumanjog, Ronda, Alcantara and finally Badian. We travelled  a few more kilometres until we reached Barangay Matutinao at 10:00 o’clock. From the junction we walked towards the direction of Kawasan Falls with Annabella Esbillas, KNPMPC Treasurer serving as our guide . . .

Kawasan Falls

The SOEMCO staff walking their way towards Kawasan Falls

Along the way, we stopped on a stall to pay the Php 10.00 per head entrance fee. The SOEMCO staff  also took turns buying souvenirs such as breaded necklace, bracelets and  t-shirts prominently printed with “Kawasan Falls.”

We walked on gravelled road along tributaries crossing in the process three small bridges. As we went deeper into a rainforest, some of the female employees were already starting to feel exhausted. But the roaring in the distance announcing our approach to the phenomenal natural attraction had mobilized our strength to proceed. The roaring increased and became more and more thundering as we went on. Finally, after 30-minutes of walking on a 750-meter road, we reached the First Level of Kawasan Falls. Candidly,  it seemed I was hypnotized by the close encounter with this natural spectacle . . .

Since it was a Good Friday, the spot was on a festive mood full of local and foreign tourists enjoying a swim on the turquoise plunge pool . . .

Kawasan Falls

I was preparing to settle and take more pictures but our tour guide signaled that we have to proceed to the second level 250 meters away as our billeting area was situated therein. Hence, we proceeded and maneuvered on sometimes steep and narrow  but oftentimes comfortable trails. On our way, my sight was glued at the enthralling view of a fan-type mini falls . . .

Our tour guide signaled that we were already about to reach our destination. I stopped for a while as I was fascinated to see this spillway . . .

We were warmly welcomed by Ms. Myrna Divinagracia, Ms. Milagros Batongmalaki and Mr. Iasuro Belarmino, Kawasan Nature Park Multi-Purpose Cooperative (KNPMPC) Chairman and members of the board, respectively. After taking a sumptuous dinner prepared by the cooperative, the hospitable officers oriented the group on the cooperative’s history, governance and management. Afterwards, the staff engaged in a free-for-all swim into the plunge pool. . .

To satisfy my curiosity, I decided to proceed to the Kawasan Falls water source. As I climbed on a steep and sometimes slippery trail, I passed by and took shots of this  enthralling  view . . .

I slogged further into slippery stones for 30 minutes until I reached the 3rd level cascading Kawasan Falls . . .

Kawasan Falls – Final Thoughts

The sight of a flowing water rapidly dropping in elevation as it flows over a steep region or a cliff is truly a wonderful experience among the SOEMCO staff. The lessons learned on how to operate a cooperative-run nature park are really worth the time, money and efforts.

Finally, the view of a multi-step waterfalls, or a series of waterfalls one after another of roughly the same size each with its own sunken plunge pool, which characterized Kawasan Falls will surely go down as one of the most exciting trips I have had undertaken in my life.

Island Vacations – Conquering Philippines Niagara, The Tinuy-an Falls In Surigao del Sur

Island Vacations In Waterfalls – An Introduction

Island vacations enthusiasts are not only fond of searching for the clear water beach, best beaches, seaside lagoon or surfing waves but are also interested to visit island getaways hosting ponds and waterfalls. Nevertheless, there are little-known island vacations sites which are not included in the list of famous waterfalls nor frequently featured in renowned waterfalls pictures but actually possesses the grandeur comparable to the biggest waterfall in the world. Such is the case of the less advertised Tinuy-an Falls, dubbed by writers who had visited this  island vacations spot as the “Niagara Falls of the Philippines,” situated in Bislig City, Province of Surigao del Sur in the southeastern coast of the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines.

Island Vacations In Tinuy-an Falls – How And Why

The island vacations spot can be reached via a 20-minute private vehicle travel from the Paper Country Inn, in Mangagoy, Bislig City passing through the national highway, maneuvering to the left upon reaching the junction road in Barangay Cumawas and taking on a bumpy feeder road towards the site located in Barangay Burboanan. It can also be reached in 30 minutes from the Bislig City Government Center following the 18-kilometer Poblacion-San Isidro-Burboanan-Tinuy-an Route.

The best time to visit the waterfalls is in the early months or towards the end of the year when maximum rainfall is experienced in Caraga Region and the water pressure is at its peak like that of my visit to the area in November 22, 2009 with my wife and 4 of our 5 children courtesy of the Bislig Government Employees Multi-Purpose Cooperative (BGEMCO) through my friends Aprodecio A. Alba, Jr., Jonathan L. Jamora and Almar B. Autida, Chairman, Vice-Chair and BOD member, respectively, as well as the other coop officers.

Right after the vehicle engine comes to a complete stop, you will start knowing why Tinuy-an Falls as an island vacations destinations is a must-see for nature lovers:

1-      The sound. The impact of the cascading waters plunging into the ravine produces a thundering sound like that of a roaring monster which is audible even when you are still 500 meters away from the waterfalls.

2-      The Sight and Feel. The view of the 3-tiered waterfalls having a stunning 55 meters height and 95 meters width presents the first-time visitor a truly spectacular and awe-inspiring sight of a mighty waterfall in action. Further, the dark-brownish color of the cliffs combined with the bright blue pool at its base adds to both the mystery and allure of this falls. Furthermore, the catwalks made up of steel and concrete make it easy for you to climb up from one tier to another and get close-up and intimate views of the beauty and grandeur of this iconic natural attraction. Meanwhile, come to this island vacations destination between 9 to 11 o’clock in the morning on a sunny day and you will surely be treated to a bright rainbow arching across its base. Finally, the cool breeze produced by the surrounding rainforest and the mist that smack on your face produces an extraordinary and exhilarating feeling.

3-      The Swim and Bath. The presence of 3 islets near the “plunge pool” at the base of the waterfall makes swimming in this island vacations spot a really fantastic experience. Further, standing against the rock wall on the right-most side of the second tier towards the catwalk and letting the slow cascading waters fall on your back provides a mild and gentle massage effect.

Island Vacations In Tinuy-an Falls – Final Thoughts

Island vacations aficionados especially the waterfalls enthusiasts are willing to travel considerable distances to savor the renowned waterfalls in action. Thus, efforts should be done by the Tinuy-an Falls stakeholders to let this promising island vacations spot be put in the map of famous waterfalls in the country, if not in the whole world.
