Island Vacations – The Nomination

Island Vacations was nominated by Marcia of Inside Journeys to participate in the “My 7 Links Project” (Thanks Very Much, Marcia!)

Initiated by Tripbase, the My 7 Links Project aims “to unite bloggers (from all sectors) in a joint endeavor to share lessons learned and create a bank of long but not forgotten blog posts that deserve to see the light of day again.”

Island Vacations – My 7 Chosen Blog Posts

I’m very honored that Marcia has nominated my Island Vacations blog. It was difficult to select just seven of my blog posts but I hope you’ll like the ones I chose.

My Most Beautiful Post – Majestic Beach Resort- 3 Irresistible Motives To Visit Club Tara in Bucas Grande Island

There are lots of beautiful places that I visited but the Club Tara Resort stood out as the best. Its location inside a small sheltered bay on the idyllic southern coast of Bucas Grande Island, Philippines set in the backdrop of verdant islets and rolling karst hills carpeted with lush tropical vegetation is very enviable. The breath-taking sight of the sparkling light, purplish blue color of the waters fronting the resort resembling that of a clear and unclouded sky surely captivates your senses and rejuvenates your soul.

My Most Popular Post – Island Vacations- Why Sohoton Cove In Bucas Grande Island Is Dubbed As All-In-One Tourist Destination

Considered as the Philippines’ emerging all-in-one tourist destination, the Sohoton Cove in Bucas Grande Island, Philippines is accessible during low tide only through the 40-meter Sohoton Cave serving as the sole entry and exit point. Once you’re inside the cove, you’ll surely ask yourself if you’re still in this world. You would really enjoy your island vacations by sightseeing and birdwatching on its thickly vegetated identical islets and scenic rock formations, snorkel and dive on its sparkling turquise waters, experience fun and thrill on its magnifecent caverns and swim with the smack of non-stingy jellyfish.

My Most Controversial Post – Saltwater Crocodile Wrestling – My Visit To A Thrill Seeker Destination in Bangkok, Thailand

It was during my travel to Thailand that I had witnessed the most controversial stunt in my whole life- that of a human wrestling with a saltwater crocodile. My heart was pounding heavily from start to end of the Crocodile Wrestling Show at the Samphran Elephant Ground and Zoo located west of Bangkok.

My Most Helpful Post – Battlefield Tours – My Trip To Corregidor Island, Philippines (Part 4)

I had criticized the acts of the tour guides  during my Battlefield Tours in the historic Corregidor Island in the Philippines in cracking jokes branding the Philippine Senators and Congressmen, in general, as a bunch of “leeches.” I might forgive them for uttering those words if only we were all Filipinos in the group. What pissed me off was the fact that the foreigners beside me were laughing their hearts out with that crap joke. My post on my Island Vacations blog had helped in pushing the management to ban the offensive “green joke-cracking” among their pool of tour guides.

A Post Whose Success Surprised Me – Real Friends – My Key In Wining The Go Pro Hero Contest

Almost all of my blog posts were Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tight. I intentionally made this post as SEO light as possible at it was dedicated to my supporters during the Go-Pro Hero Camera Contest sponsored by Dave and Deb of The Planet D. It turned out to be one of my two highest ranked blog posts by Google.

A Post I Feel Didn’t Get The Attention It Deserved – Island Vacations – 3 Overwhelming Basis To Visit Kapihan View Park in Bucas Grande Island

Candidly, I consider the Kapihan View Park to be one of the best sightseeing destinantions in Bucas Grande Island, Philippines. Hence, I poured all my writing prowess into this Island Vacations blog post hopefully to catch the maximum attention as possible. Sadly, it seemed didn’t fit with my readers’ taste.

The Post  That I Am Most Proud Of – Heritage Tours – My Travel To Rizal Shrine In Dapitan City, Mindanao Island, Philippines

Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the Philippine National Hero, in his dying scene of the novel “El Filibusterismo” had quipped: “I die without seeing the dawn shining in my native land. You who could see it, welcome it, and forget not those who had fallen during the night.” In honor of Rizal’s 150th Birth Anniversary last June 19, 2011, I wrote this post as my own little way of responding to his clarion call and as my maiden entry to the Pinoy Travel Bloggers Blog Carnival. Fortunately, it gained wide acceptance from the members of the Filipino travel blogging community.

Waterproof Camera – An Indispensable Island Escapade Gadget, An Appeal For Support

Acquiring a waterproof camera is among my wish list after I launched my island vacations site in the remaining hours of December 31, 2010. The reason of course is obvious- there are so many under and over water scenes that can only be captured by a waterproof camera. In the vicinity of Sohoton Cove in Bucas Grande Island, Socorro, Surigao del Norte, Philippines alone, there are so many comely natural attractions worthy to take pictures or videos at but are impossible to be photographed using my Nikon D 7000 DLSR Camera, among them:

  1. The “Hagukan” Cavern – the name is coined from the local term “haguk,” which literally means “snore,” due to the thundering sound resembling that of a snoring giant that it produces as low tide approaches. The strange phenomenon happens as the trapped air inside the cavern escapes out when the narrow entrance is exposed as a result of the receding water. You can enter the tiny cavern by going on a 10-meter free style swimming towards a hard coral serving as platform at the cavern’s center.  Your thrill will not stop at setting foot on the hard coral submerged half a meter below sea level for the reasons that, as you glance upwards, you can savor the breathtaking view of the sparkling crystalline white stalactites and stalagmites in its grandest forms which, aided by a bit of light coming from the pinched entrance, illumined the entire cavern. Looking downwards, you can witness a luminous turquoise waters which seemed like brightened by compact florescent lamps thereby offering the only chance of dark-skinned visitors to wear a fair complexion. A terrific sight indeed very much worthy to be shared to my readers which can only be captured by a waterproof camera.

2. The “Magkukuob” Cavern- the monicker is taken from the Visayan word “kuob” which connotes “bend” as you have to lean your body forward to barely make through a low entry point and walk up the steep and rugged passageway into a skylight towards a wooden platform on a cliff situated 15 feet above sea level. Truly, the diving platform seemed so low for spectators on board the boat. But for the first timers stepping on it, the sight resembles that of the ocean scenery as seen from the window of  the ascending plane. In fact, visitors wanted to go back but would be turned off with the recently experienced rock  climbing and spelunking challenge. Hence, he/she would be left with no choice but plunge into the crystal-clear waters.  Candidly, the whole climbing and plunging experienced is worthy to be documented but only a waterproof still and video  camera is  capable  of doing so.

Truly, after I had acquired my Nikon D 7000 DSLR Camera, I  engaged on a saving session for my long-dreamed waterproof camera. Fortunately, fate seemed on my side that I might acquire it without spending my hard earned money. Being an avid fan of Deb & Dave of The PlanetD’s Round the Workd Adventures, I  did my customary scan over their latest blog posts. To my excitement, I stumbled on their post about the Go Pro Hero HD Camera Contest launched in their facebook page with this high definition still and video camera being offered as a prize. . .

Glancing at the camera, I said to myself “this is the waterproof still and video camera that I had dreamed to acquire for so long  time.”  Excitedly, I participated in the contest taking into consideration the contest mechanics.  As I opened my facebook account yesterday and to my surprise,  I received a notice that I was selected as one of the ten finalists. The final winner will be picked from among the highest number of votes coming from facebook account holders. So here I am, appealing for the support of my dear readers. To vote for me, please follow these voting mechanics:

a. Click on this Facebook Link:  ”The PlanetD’s Round the World Adventures” and “LIKE” on the fan page;

b. Go to: “GoPro Contest Finalists”  album;

c. Click my picture, the one with UP Sablay, and “LIKE” it.

Your like would be counted as one vote for me. Voting will end on April 2, 2011. Wherefore,  my dear readers, with so much humility I am earnestly soliciting your support for me to win the much coveted waterproof camera. Rest assured that your generosity would be reciprocated in terms of quality posts coupled with high quality photos and videos taken, hopefully, with use of the said Go Pro Hero HD Camera.

Island Vacations – Why Sohoton Cove In Bucas Grande Is Dubbed As All-In-One Tourist Destination

Island Vacations- An Introduction

Island vacations aficionados prefer to spend unique vacations and visit island getaways hosting a variety of natural tourist attractions like a seaside lagoon with islets having lush natural vegetation and wildlife resembling that of floating rock gardens in crystal clear water teeming with coral fish and surrounded by fantastic caverns. Name them all and it is found in the famous island vacations spot named Sohoton Cove in Bucas Grande Island, Socorro, Surigao del Norte, Philippines.

Island Vacations – What Sohoton Cove Can Offer?

Island vacations are best spent in Sohoton Cove as it is a single tourist destination that offers you a variety of tourist attractions:

1-    Enchanting Cove. As part of the Inayaran Inlet in the southwestern part of the island, the cove is accessible only during low tide through the 40-meter Sohoton Cave serving as the sole entry and exit to the area. The best time to enter the cave is when the tidal movement recedes enabling the sea water current to slow down or come to a complete stop. You could have a completely satisfying experience if you will ride on a kayak or canoe. But if you are on a group, you can opt to ride a motorized boat and signal the operator to stop the engine upon entry and just paddle it inwards. You will be a little bit nervous and breathing with emotional thrill as the boat slowly enters the passage way. Going into the center of the cave and as the foreign light from the other end meets your eyes, you could hear a mixture of strange sounds resembling that of a banging metal or other identical vibrations. A very dark corner at the left side occasionally shoots-off a noise that resembles that of a frying lard. With the dim light from the outside serving as background, you can view the spell binding stalactites hanging from the cavern’s ceiling. Looking down, you can see blended colors of sea water often forming tiny whirlpools as the cave ends into the serenity of the lagoon.

2-    Identical Islets. A hard-to-explain feeling of fulfillment for your island vacations would greet you once you are inside. Looking straightforward, you cannot help but admire the sight of the islets of almost the same size resembling that of floating dish gardens adorned on water streets. Glancing downwards, you would be amazed with the reflections of its lush natural vegetation flashed in the pristine and crystal-clear waters. Occasionally, you can see a variety of birds and fruit bats hopping from one aguho and iron wood tree to another.

3-    Magnificent Rock Formations. A sight to behold in this island vacations spot are the spectacular, scenic and sometimes colorful rock formations resulting from weathering and erosion sculpting the existing rock of some islets.

4-    Alluring Caverns. There are 2 small caverns inside this island vacations destination. The first is the “hagukan” due to the snoring sound it emits as the water slams into the cavern. You can enter it by swimming carefully so your head will not touch the upper portion of the low mouth entrance. There is a big rock in the central portion inside the cavern where you step on and take a rest. As light comes in through the small cavern entrance, you can witness a luminous green color of the water thereby offering the only chance for dark-skinned visitors to have a fair complexion. The other cavern is the “magkukuob” coined by the bending position you shall undertake to barely make through a low opening and walk up the steep and rocky passageway towards a skylight leading to a wooden platform right on a cliff located 15 feet above sea level for a dive back into the lagoon.

5-    The Jellyfish Kingdom. If you happen to visit this island vacations spot in the months of January to September, you will be fortunate enough to mingle and swim with a smack of stingless Spotted Jelly or Lagoon Jelly (Mastigias papua) which abound inside the cove.
